Kunkletown man gets state prison term for access device fraud
A Kunkletown area man was sentenced to a state prison term Monday morning in Carbon County court after admitting to counts of access device fraud in two pending cases.
Matthew Scott Haydt, 32, was sentenced to serve a total of one to two years in a state correctional institution on two counts of access device fraud and one count of theft. Mahoning Township police filed the charges.
Police said a vehicle they had under surveillance at Lowe’s Department Store, along Route 443, included Haydt as a passenger. Police were watching the vehicle due to an attempted theft incident earlier at the Walmart store.
Through the course of the investigation it was learned Haydt and co-defendants used a stolen credit card to make a purchase at the Lowe’s store and then went to the Verizon store nearby and attempted to buy two prepaid phones with the same card. That sale was denied. The incidents occurred on Jan. 21, 2019.
Haydt is currently an inmate in the county prison but was recently sentenced in Schuylkill County in other unrelated matters to serve nine to 24 months in a state prison. He also has pending criminal charges in Northumberland County.
Nanovic ruled his sentence would run concurrent with Schuylkill County. He also ordered Haydt to make restitution to Lowe’s for $268.11, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, supply a DNA sample and pay court costs of about $1,000. He was given credit for six days spent in jail on the charges.
Co-defendant
Haydt’s co-defendant in the Lowe’s incident, Katelyn Kirchner, 23, of Walnutport, pleaded to one count of retail theft. She admitted her part in the use of a stolen credit card to make a purchase at Lowe’s.
Nanovic placed her on probation for a year and ordered her to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, supply a DNA sample, zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation.
