Lansford discusses relocating bus stop
Lansford Borough Council is exploring the idea of relocating one of the primary school bus stops in town because of its proximity to the borough’s fire station and an absentee landlord who doesn’t shovel snow.
The borough recently heard from the school district’s transportation provider, who asked if they wished to change any bus stops in the borough.
The school bus stop in question is located on Bertsch Street at the former Panther Valley Middle School.
A number of parents drive their children to the bus stop, sometimes restricting access to the parking lot at American Fire Co. No. 1.
More than a year ago, the fire company contacted the borough after their entrance was blocked during a fire call, Councilman Matt Walsh said.
Firefighters rushing to get to a call could also be a danger to students who may not be paying attention, John Turcmanovich said.
Another issue with the stop is snow during the wintertime. The property owner lives in Florida. Turcmanovich said he met with a property manager, who related they were not given permission from the owner to shovel the walk. He said if the borough shoveled the walk, it could be held liable for any injuries that may occur.
The Rev. Hugh Vrablic suggested that the borough’s code enforcement officer should cite the property owner for violating the borough’s ordinance regarding removing snow and ice.
Resident Patrick Walsh said despite the snow, the bus stop provides a safe, open area for children to wait for the bus.
Resident Ron Derr Jr. said he would like to see better traffic control near another school bus stop.
