Lehigh man admits driving ambulance under influence

A Lehigh County man admitted in Carbon County court on Friday to driving an ambulance while under the influence of alcohol.

Kyle Aaron Dreibelbies, 39, of Allentown, pleaded before Judge Steven R. Serfass to one count of driving under the influence of alcohol for an incident on Aug. 11, 2019.

Lehighton police were dispatched to St. Luke’s Hospital, Lehighton, for a report of an ambulance driver under the influence.

Officers spoke with Dreibelbies in the emergency room area and detected a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. He also showed other signs of intoxication.

He admitted driving a Palmerton ambulance to the hospital with an EMT and a patient. He submitted to a blood test with the result showing 0.23 BAC.

Dreibelbies admitted to an alcohol abuse problem which he said he was addressing. He also said he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and was also counseling for that. He also said he no longer is an ambulance driver but is employed in the construction industry in the Allentown area.

Serfass sentenced Dreibelbies to the mandatory minimum of 5 days to 6 months in jail, a fine of $500, one year license suspension, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and render 25 hours of community service.

He will serve the prison term on consecutive weekends beginning Feb. 7 at 7 a.m. and serve 3 days, then Feb. 15 and serve 2 days.

Even though there is the big war on drugs in this country, it is becoming more and more acceptable for people to indulge in chemicals in a social setting which seems to extend over into shall I say the supposedly serious occupations.
