Lehigh man charged with altering registration

A Lehigh County man faces charges for altering a car registration.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Adam Shimer of the Palmerton Borough Police Department:

On the night of Jan. 3, Shimer saw a silver 2001 Honda van pass heading north with heavily tinted front windows.

Shimer stopped the car, driven by Derick Hymans, 26, of the 900 block of West Walnut Street, Allentown.

The state inspection sticker was crinkled and detaching from the windshield.

The stickers were removed, revealing the last four digits of the VIN to be 4257, which did not match the Honda VIN’s last four of 9831.

As the stickers were removed, it was revealed that they were set to expire as of February 2019, and were placed over a “9” attached to the windshield.

A check of Hymans’ driver’s history revealed that he had six previous driving while suspended convictions and three prior driving without a license convictions.

A certified registration was also obtained which revealed the Honda was titled to Hymans bearing another VIN.

Hymans faces charges of altered, forged or counterfeit documents and plate; habitual offender; driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked; drivers required to be licensed; and windshield obstructions and wipers.

He is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. Feb. 13 before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.
