Lehighton alumni group and LEAF organize events

The Lehighton Alumni Association has been busy organizing itself with the support of the Lehighton Education and Athletic Foundation (www.leaf-foundation.org).

It has lined up several events this year to promote its mission, which is to promote camaraderie among alumni and the Lehighton community while supporting the LEAF mission statement and having fun.

The group has been meeting monthly putting together a team to offer various events to cover a range of interests, as it wants to appeal to class years from the 1940s to the classes of the 2010s.

It has the following events scheduled:

• March 17: “St. Patrick Days Dance” at the Orioles with Becky and the Beast

• May 5: “Blue Ridge Winery Tour and Dinner”

• Aug. 17: “A Night of IronPigs Baseball in the Pigpen with Fireworks”

• Oct. 13: “A Tour of Gettysburg”

There are countless other events the group plans to offer, such as multiday bus trips, travel abroad (A Hawaiian Island tour with Norwegian cruise line), day trips to sports, historic and fun places.

Beyond events, it also hopes to offer alumni support in regard to education, vocation, career, having a directory of contacts available to students, an all-alumni picnic/dinner event, and bus transportation to away games.

The group is open to ideas and volunteers, and look forward to support and having fun, according to Michael Everett, alumni president.

“It is really an exciting time for us,” said Everett, who added that LEAF was incorporated as a nonprofit in 2014. “Soon after, we started seeing the support and desire to give back the school system.

Everett said several classes have given gifts to the district such as the spirit bell, hallway bench in the school, pavers, while individuals have also been providing gifts.

“We have also seen the tremendous support at the scholarship level,” he said. “LEAF as a nonprofit offers an avenue of support that previously was never available.”

Everett said that in the past several years, scholarships, teachers grant, student sponsorship and alumni recognition (Graduates of Distinction) have all been started and have grown in support.

LEAF also has been putting together events and currently has scheduled the following:

• Jan. 27: “A Night at the Races”

• April 26-28: “Lehighton School Carnival”

• June 16: “Graduates of Distinction Dinner”
