Lehighton revisits revisions to sidewalks, snow removal ordinances

Lehighton may make revisions to its sidewalks ordinance and snow removal ordinance.

On a 3-1 vote, borough council at a special meeting on Thursday initially agreed to approve the advertisement to amend sections of the ordinances regarding sidewalks and snow shoveling.

Council members Autumn Abelovsky, Ryan Saunders and Lisa Perry were in favor, with council President Grant Hunsicker opposed.

Council members Joe Flickinger, Jared McEvoy and Darryl Arner were absent.

Hunsicker said that the borough has properties “all over the place” where people would have to shovel 36-inch-wide paths.

“If the borough can’t do it, why are we forcing the people to do it?” Hunsicker asked. “I have a problem with that.”

Hunsicker added, “I don’t think we should go out and hammer people for their sidewalks when we can’t do it.”

After further discussion, it was then decided that council would hold off on approving the matter until the full slate of council members are in attendance when council meets at 7 p.m. Feb. 11.

Abelovsky said she understood Hunsicker’s concerns.

“It’s a no-win situation,” Abelovsky said.

Hunsicker remained steadfast in his belief.

“I don’t think we should be hammering everybody if they don’t have it done,” he said.

In April, Abelovsky asked to make revisions to the borough’s sidewalk ordinance and snow removal ordinance.

Abelovsky said doing so would not only lend to the safety of the borough for pedestrians, but also add to the curb appeal of the homes.
