Lehighton talks about future site of tennis courts

Published July 10. 2018 12:44PM

The future home of Lehighton Area High School’s tennis team is coming into focus.

At the district’s most recent building and grounds committee meeting on July 3, Kyle Spotts, director of activities and athletics and supervisor of plant operations, said Lehighton received three drawings at three possible locations for the courts.

The first, located near the high school, was estimated at $183,174. A second option, near the district administration building, would cost around $184,100 and a third, near the football practice field, would cost $176,045.

According to Spotts, the site near the high school is the preferred location due to “gym class use, parking, bus parking, etc.”

Board member Steve Holland requested an alternate item be added to the cost estimate to include lighting at the courts.

Spotts said he would contact Carbon Engineering, the Summit Hill firm which conducted the feasibility study for the courts.

Lehighton’s tennis team practiced at Palmerton Area High School, free of charge, and played matches on the road during the 2018 season after Maple Tree Inn Tennis Club, where it previously played home matches, was put up for sale.

Middle School press box

Lehighton received two quotes for construction of a press box at the middle school stadium, Director Joy Beers told the building and grounds committee.

The first, from Hoffman Machine, came in at $8,500, and the second, from Troy Honey Welding, came in at $15,000.

The district is looking at a press box large enough to fit three people comfortably, along with a table.

Spotts said he would follow up with an additional company for a third quote in the next month.
