Lehighton will have race for council

Published June 13. 2019 12:11PM

There will be a contested race for four positions on the Lehighton Borough Council in the General Election in November. Write-in votes resulted in one person winning both Democratic and Republican nominations and another candidate whose name was on the Democratic ballot also winning the GOP side.

The end result will be five people running for the four seats.

Here is what resulted from the recent certification of write-in votes in the Lehighton area by the Carbon County Board of Elections:

Lehighton

In balloting for four four-year terms on the Lehighton Borough Council, Mark Hoffman won both Democratic and Republican nominations via write-in votes to get his name on both tickets for November. Grant R. Hunsicker also won a Republican nomination through that process.

Hunsicker and William Rodweller were the only Democratic candidates whose names appeared on the Democratic ballot. They will now be joined by Hoffman, who received 38 write-in votes.

On the GOP side, winners Darryl W. Arner and Lisa Perry, who were filed candidates, will be joined by Hoffman, who had 42 write-in votes, and Hunsicker, who tallied 17.

East Penn Township

In East Penn Township, no names appeared on either ballot for the four-year term on the East Penn Township Board of Supervisors.

Woodrow R. Frey won the Republican nomination for that seat with 27 write-in votes. Dennis L. Pearson trailed him with 14 write-in votes. No one was successful in attempting to win the Democratic nomination, meaning Frey will be the only name on the ballot in the General Election.

Pearson, however, will be the Democratic candidate running against Republican Gary P. Kuehner for a six-year term on the board. Parryville

No candidates were on the ballot in May for two four-year terms available on the Parryville Borough Council.

Jason T. Smith received 11 Democratic write-in ballots to become the lone candidate on the ballot in November.
