Northwestern picked up shutout victories in both baseball and softball to highlight Monday’s scholastic schedule.

SOFTBALL

Jim Thorpe-Tamaqua

Tamaqua rolled to a 15-0 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe in a game stopped in the third inning by the mercy rule.

The Raiders’ Jada Schellhammer had a big day on the mound and at the plate. Schellhammer got the pitching win, striking out six and allowing just one hit. Offensively, she had three doubles, three RBIs, and scored twice.

Schellhammer got plenty of support as Courtney Hoffman added two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs; Brooke Zellner had two doubles, two RBIs, and scored three times; Kaitlyn Stauffenberg had two hits, two RBIs, two stolen bases, and scored a run. Miranda Chinchar had a single, an RBI, and scored twice; Taylar Donnon had a hit, an RBI, and a run scored; and Jen Frederickson scored a pair of runs.

Trista Gehris had Jim Thorpe’s only hit.

Palmerton-Bangor

Paige Shupp knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Palmerton edged Bangor, 9-8, in Colonial League action.

Amanda Lalik had three hits, including a triple, and knocked in a run for the Bombers (3-2). Shupp had two hits.

Sarah Harvat and Kaitlyn Karasek both hit home runs for Bangor.

Wilson-Northwestern

Emily Akelaitis pitched a three-hit shutout and Ashley Sisco led Northwestern offensively as the Tigers blanked Wilson, 10-0, in Colonial League action.

Sisco went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBIs. The winners, who improved to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in the league, also received a triple and three RBIs from Kayla Mitman, while Natalie Smith chipped in with a double and an RBI.

Akelaitis struck out three in her six innings of work.

Pen Argyl-No. Lehigh

Pen Argyl used two seventh-inning runs to earn a 4-2 Colonial League victory and hand Northern Lehigh its first loss of the season.

Molly Kutz paced the Green Knights with three hits, two of them triples, and two RBIs. Jacqueline Kerler added a pair of hits and knocked in a run.

For the Bulldogs, Katie Yesick had a double and knocked in a run, while Briana Schuck also chipped in with a two-base hit.

The defeat dropped Nolehi to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the league. The win was Pen Argyl’s first, as it improved to 1-3.

Pine Grove-Lehighton

Pine Grove scored in every inning en route to an 11-0 Schuylkill League win over Lehighton.

Caitlyn Becher, Trish Kopinetz, and Kate Rittenbaugh each had two hits and scored two runs for the Cardinals.

The Indians (2-2; 1-1) received hits from Heidi Greene, Ryanne Hoffman, Alexis Scott and Becky Serfass.

Panther Vy.-PM West

Panther Valley breezed to a 13-2 non-league win over Pocono Mountain West.

Megan Pascoe went the distance on the mound for the Panthers, allowing just three hits and two runs in the mercy-rule shortened victory.

Pascoe was also a force offensively, as she had a double and a triple. Sydney Clouser and Lyddia Malaska also added doubles for the Panthers.

BASEBALL

Wilson-Northwestern

Drew White tossed six innings of shutout ball, and Noah Russo added a scoreless inning of relief, as Northwestern blanked Wilson, 8-0, in Colinial League play.

White allowed just two hits and struck out two to improve his pitching record to 2-0 on the season.

Tyler Wiik and Trevor Schreiner both had three hits to lead the Tigers offensively. Wiik’s offensive exploits included a two-run homer, while Schreiner had a double and three RBIs as part of his big game.

Pine Grove-Lehighton

A seventh-inning rally by Lehighton came up just short as Pine Grove held on for an 8-7 Schuylkill League win.

Zach Crum had a home run, a single and two RBIs for the Indians. Logan Wentz had two hits and drove in a run.

For Pine Grove, Garrett Lehman had three hits and knocked in two runs. Cody Wike and Jacob Bohr both added two hits.

Pen Argyl-No. Lehigh

Pen Argyl exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to post a 9-4 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

Sean Murray had four hits for Pen Argyl.

For Northern Lehigh, Gio Colon and Preston Bauer both had a pair of hits and an RBI.

TENNIS

Lehighton-Pleasant Vy.

Pleasant Valley swept Lehighton in a non-league doubleheader.

In the opening match, the Bears posted a 6-0 victory as Josh Schaffner, Jake Ammermann and Najja Francis all recorded dominating singles wins. Schaffner posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 while Ammermann and Francis lost just one game each in straight set victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.

In the nightcap of the twinbill, Pleasant Valley recorded a 5-1 victory.

The teams played pro sets in all six matches, with Pleasant Valley sweeping the three singles matches while dropping a total of just two games in the process. Francis rolled to an 8-0 win at No. 1 singles while Mike Tauer and Brian Kagel moved up from their normal doubles positions to pick victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.

Allentown Central Catholic cruised to a 5-0 non-league victory over Jim Thorpe.

The Olympians’ top performance came at No. 3 singles where Matt Widdicombe dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Charlie Carbonetto.
