Jim Thorpe had a pair of wrestling tournament champions on Friday.

Christmas Tournament

Host Jim Thorpe crowned a pair of champions in its 27-team tournament.

John Newhall took the 113-pound title while Ethan Mordaunt captured the 195-pound crown. Newhall recorded a major decision and a decision to reach the final where he pinned Gavin Locke of North Schuylkill in 5:22. Mordaunt was a pinning machine on his to the championship, recording falls in all three of his bouts, including a 4:31 pin of Jonah Nisenbaum of Salisbury in the final.

The Olympians had two other wrestlers place. At 106, William Schwartz finished fourth. He picked up a pair decisions to reaqch the semifinals, but lost his next two bouts. At 182-pounds, Austin Williams battled back to finish in fifth place after falling in the quarterfinals. Williams had a 4-1 record that included a pair of pins.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Palmerton-Northern Lehigh

A solid second half allowed Palmerton to gain a 39-25 victory over Northern Lehigh in the consolation game of the Indian Holiday Classic.

Linnaea Lister scored eight of her 10 points in the final two frames as the Blue Bombers (4-4) broke a halftime and pulled away for the victory.

Emily Recker also finished with 10 points for the winners, while Kayla Cincilla added eight.

For the Bulldogs (2-6), Jada Saeger ended with a game-high 16 points.

Marian-Loyalsock

Loyalsock rallied to beat Marian, 49-45, in a non-league game.

The Fillies held a 29-20 halftime lead, but Loyalsock roared back behind nine second-half points from Sarah VanFleet. Maddie Fox led the Lancers (6-2) with 15 points. VanFleet added 13.

For Marian (6-2), Emily Shaud and Emma McClafferty both scored 14 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lehighton-Catasauqua

Isaiah Graves scored a game-high 20 points to lift Catasauqua to a 56-49 non-league win over visiting Lehighton.

Jaylen Green added 16 points, including three of his team’s eight three-pointers.

For the Indians, who dropped to 1-8, Addison Howland finished with a team-high 15 points. Caine Carpenter finished with 11, while Collin Troxell netted 10.

LEHIGHTON
