Jim Thorpe had some strong individual performances in the South Williamsport wrestling Tournament on Saturday.

WRESTLING

Jim Thorpe took part in the South Williamsport Tournament and turned in some impressive showings.

The Olympians crowned four champions as John Newhall (113), Austin Williams (182), Ethan Mordaunt (195) and Will Schwartz (106) all captured their weekend brackets. Andrew Eisenhardt (120) also had a nice outing, as he finished second in his weight class.

Northwestern, No. Lehigh

at Zephyr Duals

Northwestern and Northern Lehigh both ran into some tough competition at the Zephyr Duals.

The Tigers went 1-3 on the day, beating Dieruff 48-27, but losing to Sommerville, Wyalusing and East Stroudsburg South.

Several Northwestern wrestlers had strong individual showings. Matt Peters (145) and Caleb Clymer (170) were both unbeaten. Peters pinned all four of his opponents while Clymer had three pins and a decision. Jackson Bernhard (160) went 3-1 with three falls, Harrison Bernhard (132) was 3-1 with two falls, and Ben Griffith (120) went 3-1 with a pin and a technical fall.

Northern Lehigh went 0-3, losing to Bangor, Muncy and Quakertown.

Seth Fronheiser went 2-1 at 132 pounds for the Bulldogs.

Tamaqua-Harrisburg Duals

Tamaqua took part in the Harrisburg Duals and came away with two team wins.

The Blue Raiders defeated Faith Christian Academy (36-24), and Upper Perkiomen (38-32) in close matches, before dropping decisions to Governor Mifflin (28-48), Hamburg Area (22-46, and Berlin Brothers Valley (33-38).

Brandon Mader, Pierce Demetriades and Aaron Coccio all finished with 3-2 individual records throughout the course of the event, as well.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Shenandoah-Panther Valley

Panther Valley blew up in the second half to pull away from Shenandoah Valley for a 74-43 Schuylkill League win.

Tristan Blasko’s game-high 26 points led the Panthers (6-3, 3-0). Rene Figueroa added 15.

For the Blue Devils (0-8, 0-2), Johnny Chinchay had 11 points.

The Panthers prevailed in the JV game, 51-41.

Pine Grove-Tamaqua

Tamaqua outlasted Pine Grove in a Schuylkill League shootout, 72-64.

Leading the Blue Raiders (9-2, 3-1) was Brayden Knoblauch with 21 points. Lucas Gregoire (15 points), Derian Stianche (11) and Thad Zuber (10) contributed to the big offensive output.

For the Cards (5-4, 1-2), Dawson Ibarra tallied 18 points.

Tamaqua won the JV contest, 50-32.

Jim Thorpe-Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain remained undefeated in the Schuylkill League with a 54-38 win over Jim Thorpe.

The Blue Eagles (9-1, 4-0), were led in scoring by Jakob Biever’s 13 points.

For the Olympians (5-4, 1-2), Justin Marykwas had 12 points and freshman Isaiah Spruill chipped in with 10.

Blue Mountain prevailed in the JV contest, 47-40.

Marian-Mahanoy Area

Following a high-scoring first half, Marian’s offense was limited after intermission as Mahanoy Area rallied for a 62-56 Schuylkill League victory.

Shane Miller tallied 16 points to lead the Golden Bears (4-4, 2-1).

Tyler Fritz had a huge game for the Colts (2-4, 1-1), who had a double-digit halftime lead, pouring in 28 points. Chris Ritsick added 14.

Salisbury-Northwestern

Northwestern overcame a slow start to pick up a 48-44 Colonial League win over Salisbury.

The Tigers (7-3, 5-2) got a huge game from Devin Thomas, who led all scorers with 20 points. Luke Hallman followed with 11.

For the Falcons (1-10, 1-6), Jack Reichenbach scored 18.

Northwestern won the JV game, 59-31.

The Spartans (5-2, 1-2), saw Pete Kotzo and Alonzo Guerrero both tally 14 points.

For the Indians (2-9, 0-4), Taquan Bradley-Chambers led the way with 12 points.

Kayley Kovac paced Jim Thorpe to a 56-49 non-league victory over Lake Lehman.

Kovac scored a game-high 29 points for the Olympians (5-4), Payton Kovac backed her sister with 14 points.

For Lake Lehman, Savannah Purdy led the way with 15 points.

Lake Lehman scored a close 54-53 JV win.

Pine Grove limited Tamaqua to single-digit periods throughout this match-up as they took a 43-27 Schuylkill League win.

Leading the Cardinals in scoring was Steph Boyer with 16 points.

For the Raiders (7-3), Emma Kuczynski scored nine points.

Pine Grove also won the JV contest by the same score, 43-27, despite 13 points from Tamaqua’s Baylee Reinhardt.
