Local Sports Roundup: Results of Jan. 9

The Northwestern boys and girls basketball teams both notched wins in basketball action on Tuesday.

In other games, the Northern Lehigh and Weatherly boys, along with the Pleasant Valley girls, also picked up victories.

BOYS BASKETBALL

N. Schuylkill-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe, which trailed by 11 points at halftime, got within four before North Schuylkill regained the edge and registered a 60-50 Schuylkill League win.

The Spartans’ Alonzo Guerrero led all scorers with 20 points, while Pete Kotzo followed right behind with 19.

For the Olympians (5-5; 1-3), Justin Marykwas and Nate Rosahac both scored nine, while Nick Rosahac added eight.

In the JV game, Thorpe posted a 37-28 win.

Northern Lehigh took command early before cruising to a 57-32 Colonial League victory over Palisades.

The Bulldogs (7-5; 4-4), who jumped out to a 28-8 halftime lead, received a game-high 26 points from Brandon Hess. Nick Seiler added 10.

For the Pirates (1-10, 1-8), Grayson Deiley hit four treys for his team-leading 12 points.

Northwestern used a balanced attack to take down Saucon Valley, 67-59, in Colonial League action.

Samuel Yadush poured in a game-high 21 points to lead the Tigers. The winners also received 13 from Deven Bollinger and 12 from Luke Hallman. Sam Seyfried chipped in with nine.

For the Panthers, Brad Yeahl had a team-high 19.

Weatherly erupted in the second quarter to take control and eventually defeated Shenandoah Valley, 73-53, in a Schuylkill League contest.

Gabe Miller dropped a game-high 21 points, including five of his team’s 11 three-pointers, to lead the Wreckers (3-5; 1-2). Scotty Zoscin followed with 11 points, while Zach Moon and Stephen Yurchack both scored 10.

For the Blue Devils (0-9; 0-3), Tyler McCole finished with 18 points.

Northwestern scored early and often, as they rolled to a 53-30 Colonial League win over Saucon Valley.

Jessica Williamson and Gabrielle Sevrain both scored 11 points to lead the winners. The Tigers also received eight points from Sage Christopher and Abigail Chisdak.

For the Panthers, Olivia Williams topped her squad with eight points.

The Pirates outscored Nolehi 16-3 in the final frame to claim the victory.

For the Bulldogs, Jada Saeger put up a game-high 22 points, including four treys, while teammate Jill Olewine added 11.

Pleasant Valley’s defense came up big in the fourth quarter to help it defeat East Stroudsburg South, 38-28, in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action.

The Bears held their opponent to just two points in the final frame to secure the win.

Masani Francis paced PV with 12 points, while Mikaela Miller and Maddison Rosenberg both chipped in with eight.

The Cavs were led by Courtney Anderson’s seven points.

Payton Kovac tallied a game-high 13 points for the Olympians (5-5; 1-4).

In the JV game, Thorpe registered a 55-38 victory.

The two teams were tied after three quarters, regulation, and the first OT before the Devils had a 10-8 edge in the second extra session.

Allison Wargo and Emily Demalis both notched 17 points for the winners.

For the Wreckers (5-4; 0-4), Emily Zoscin scored a game-high 23 points, while Megan Peifer contributed 17.

The Tamaqua girls swimming team dropped a close battle with Allentown Central Catholic, falling by a 94-88 score.

The Central boys also posted a 129-48 win.

Lexi Kerstetter continued her impressive season for the Raiders with wins in the 100 free and 100 back.

Other winners for Tamaqua included Jeff Letterhouse (200 IM), Sarah Maue (200 IM), Brianna Dumond (50 free), and Olivia Stanek (100 fly).
