LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: results from March 31

Lehighton and Panther Valley each earned mercy-rule wins in both baseball and softball action on Saturday.

The Indians handled Pocono Mountain West, while the Panthers swept Jim Thorpe.

BASEBALL

Lehighton-PM West

Chris Whiteman tossed a complete game, allowing just two hits and striking out nine, to lead Lehighton to a 14-3 non-league win over Pocono Mountain West in a game that ended after six innings by the mercy rule.

Whiteman didn’t allow an earned run in helping the Indians improve to 2-0 on the season.

Offensively, Mike Bonzielesky had a pair of doubles and four RBIs to lead Lehighton. Zach Crum and Randy Bongiorno both added two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Panther Valley-Jim Thorpe

Panther Valley pounded out 17 hits and scored in every inning but one to gain a 14-2 non-league victory over Jim Thorpe.

Jon Hafer paced the Panthers with three hits, one a double, and two runs scored. Mason Goida added a pair of hits and two runs, while Tristan Blasko delivered a single, triple and RBI.

The winners, who had hits from 12 different players, also received a single, double, and RBI from Bradley Buzzard, and a hit and two runs from Ronnie Distler.

For Thorpe, Dale Edwards and Louis Valdez each had a hit and RBI.

Pleasant Vy.-Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain rode the pitching of Drew Grace to a 5-0 non-league victory over Pleasant Valley.

Grace tossed five shutout innings for the Eagles (1-1), striking out five.

Justin Stasiak had two hits for Pleasant Valley, which saw a seventh inning rally fall short.

SOFTBALL

Panther Vy.-Jim Thorpe

Meg Pascoe knocked in seven runs to lead Panther Valley to an 18-4 mercy-rule victory over Jim Thorpe.

The Panthers scored in five of their six at-bats on their way to a non-league win.

Lyddia Malaska addded three RBIs for Panther Valley.

Victoria DeFazio had a pair of RBIs for Jim Thorpe (0-1).

Lehighton-PM West

Samantha Gruber tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out six, to lead Lehighton to a 10-0 five-inning victory over Pocono Mountain West.

The Indians took charge of the non-league game early, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning.

Heidi Green had two hits, three RBIs and scored a run for the Indians. Rachel Serfass added two hits, three runs scored and an RBI, while Becky Serfass had two hits, a run scored, and an RBI.
