A look back: April 2, 1974
One of the most generous men Coaldale and the Panther Valley has ever known was honored last evening during a testimonial banquet held in Scrafford’s Restaurant, Hometown.
Anthony “Tony” Wargo, former Schuylkill County sheriff, received the plaudits of 250 friends and relatives who attended the affair. Wargo, who served two four-year terms in office, did not seek re-election last year due to illness.
Guest speaker for the evening was Edward J. Urban, formerly of Coaldale, now public relations director for Hall’s Motor Transit Company, Harrisburg, who extolled Wargo for his ceaseless humanitarian acts, locally and throughout the country.
