A look back: Aug. 31, 1983
Carbon County’s commissioners yesterday unanimously authorized payment for a new color television Sheriff Peter Hoherchak had purchased for use by a female prisoner without prior approval by the board.
The commissioners reluctantly paid the $390 bill. Commissioner John Angst said Hoherchak purchased the TV set before he requested the authorization in a letter to the commissioners dated Aug. 8.
Angst said the sheriff should follow standard and mandated procedures when making unbudgeted purchases.
Commissioner Charles Wildoner said Hoherchak’s position created an awkward situation for the county because the TV set was already purchased and put into use. He agreed to the payment because, he said, “The county always pays its bills.”
