A look back: Dec. 23, 1960
Bishop Francis J. Furey, a native of Summit Hill whose family resides in Coaldale, was consecrated a Bishop in an age-old rite yesterday at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul in Philadelphia.
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia priest was consecrated Titular Bishop of Temnus by Archbishop Agidio Vagnozzi, Apostolic Delegate to the United States. Co-consecrators were Bishop Joseph McShea, administrator of the archdiocese, and Bishop J. Carroll McCormick of the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese.
Bishop-elect Furey has been serving as the rector of St. Helena’s Church, Philadelphia.
Three archbishops, 33 bishops, two abbots and more than 700 priests and a large number of religious and laity attended the ceremony.
