A look back: December 20, 1972

Published December 20. 2017 11:52AM

A petition signed by 42 people was presented to the Parryville Borough Council last night objecting to the councilmen voting themselves salaries of $10 a month. Previously, the council members served without pay.

Lamar Houser, newly appointed councilman, said he will need signatures of at least half of the borough’s taxpayers before being influenced by the petition. “We just can’t go by 42 out of 324,” he said.

Houser is one of four councilmen on the seven-member group who were appointed following the resignations of other councilmen. The board, meanwhile, decided to leave the governing body’s membership at seven instead of reducing it to five or three.
