A look back: Feb. 26, 1959
Amid the largest gathering ever to witness a swearing-in ceremony of a governor’s cabinet member, Frank G. McCartney of Lansford took the oath of office as the state’s new police commissioner yesterday in the Capitol in Harrisburg.
A host of personal friends, including a Carbon County delegation of some 100, swelled the overall attendance to more than 250 people.
McCartney’s oath-taking took place in Gov. David Lawrence’s reception room. Every available space in the room was filled and the crowd overflowed into the halls as Judge James C. McCready, Summit Hill, president judge of the Carbon County Courts, administered the oath of office to the new commissioner.
