A look back: Feb. 4, 1964
A sizable hole in the second floor of the Carbon County Courthouse was caused when a truck being used on the Jim Thorpe sewer project rolled some 300 feet down Packer Hill before crashing through an iron handrail along a retaining wall, and sailing majestically 17 feet through the air before slamming into a window on the landing between the first and second floors.
The incident happened seconds after the truck operator, Michael Felice, 49, of New Jersey, parked the truck to talk with his foreman, with his effort to catch the runaway truck being a vain attempt, the truck ending up being clung by its nose to the huge hole it created in the wall, with its rear-end and wheels dangling in midair.
