A look back: February 16, 1991
Controversy over Mahoning Township’s amusement tax as it pertains to the Carbon County Airport was laid to rest this week.
The township supervisors accepted a $100 check from Byron J. Arner as payment for taxes owed on scenic flights the Arner Flying Service offered in 1990 at the airport.
Arner offered the $100 in lieu of paying a $250 assessment the supervisors had previously requested.
The latter figure was a ballpark guess the township officials made a few months ago based on amusement taxes paid years ago by the flying service. Arner contended he did not have to pay the taxes because, he said, the scenic flights were educational.
