A look back: February 2`, 1980

The 1980 Heart Fund is underway in Carbon County, thanks to the many residents who are willing to sacrifice their time and energy for this worthy cause, said Barbara Spadt, administrator of the Palmerton Hospital who has been named chairman of the county campaign.

Spadt said the volunteers have a goal of $12,000 and are most enthusiastic about soliciting for the Mideastern Pennsylvania Heart Fund because it provides many free services, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation training, blood pressure screenings, penicillin for rheumatic fever victims and the Zipper Club, consisting of former heart surgery patients who help patients and families cope with the fear and anxiety of heart surgery.
