A look back: February 22, 1988

Mrs. Christine Mifkovich of Lehighton R.3 was selected grand prize winner of the first Times News Cooking Classic at a cook-off held Friday at Lehighton Area High School.

Mifkovich’s creation, a shredded apple pie, was declared the best entry in the dessert division, winning her a microwave oven. She went on to sweep all four categories as overall winner.

As grand champion, Mifkovich received an additional $200 supermarket shopping certificate.

Her winning combination of shredded green apples, orange and lemon peel and a hint of hazelnut liqueur, baked in a made-from-scratch crust and topped with whipped cream, earned her high points from the judge.
