A look back: Jan. 16, 1953

Miss Jacqueline Sassaman was awarded top honors in a girls’ elimination oratorical contest this morning in the Lansford High School auditorium.

This is the third consecutive year in which Miss Sassaman was chosen to be the school’s top orator. She is a junior student and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Sassaman of Edgemont.

The title of her oration was “Man, More Power to You.”

The young lady will represent LHS in the Carbon County Girls’ Oratorical Contest to be held in March in Nesquehoning.

Second- and third-place finishers were Alice Campbell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Campbell, and Shirley Smith, daughter of Mrs. Gladys Smith.
