A look back: Jan. 31, 1997

At a meeting held in Harrisburg, area lawmakers were told the White Haven Center, a state-operated home for the mentally impaired, will remain open, at least for now.

That was the message Nancy Thaler, deputy secretary for the Office of Mental Retardation, gave to state Reps. Keith McCall, Todd Eachus and Tom Tigue and Sen. Ray Musto, whose districts involve or are located near the center.

At the meeting held in Musto’s office, Thaler told the lawmakers Gov. Tom Ridge’s plan for the next five years has White Haven not listed “on the chopping block,” although the state plans to move 1,500 of the 3,120 people now in the centers to communities where they could live in group homes or with families.

The center employs 710 people.
