A look back: January 3, 1944
The community’s 14th casualty was reported yesterday when the War Department notified Mrs. Underwood Duffy of Palmerton, that her husband, Pfc. Duffy of East Mauch Chunk, was killed in action.
On Dec. 14, Mrs. Duffy received news that he was missing in action since Nov. 24.
Pfc. Duffy was the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Duffy, 16 E. Fifth St.
The couple has four other sons, Tech Sgt. Eugene C. Duffy, Cpl. Royce E. Duffy, Walter Jr. and Edgar.
The deceased soldier saw service in England, France, Luxembourg and Germany.
