Jim Thorpe Area School District’s condemnation of 180 acres in Penn Forest Township, where it intends to build at least one new school, is being opposed in Carbon County Court by property owners of a nearby development.

In response to the district’s declaration of taking, the Bear Creek Lakes Civic Association, through attorney David Addy, said there “is insufficient legal justification by the condemnor for the taking of the property.”

The building project is aimed at accommodating the district’s rising enrollment, a trend which is expected to continue for more than a decade. The school board has been discussing construction of an elementary school and a possible second high school in the township.
