A look back: July 5, 1961
Peter Slivka, Mauch Chunk Township Board of Education treasurer, issued checks of about $48,000 to the district’s 27 teachers and six building custodians Monday night, it being their first pay in three months.
This was made possible through a $60,000 loan negotiated through the First National Bank in Nesquehoning.
In addition to regular salaries due, some teachers who had been obliged to make personal loans in the absence of their pay received interest payments on these loans, under a provision in the School Code.
The school directors made attempts earlier to get bank loans but were prevented from doing so because of $55,000 in temporary loans up until that time.
