A look back: June 17, 1980

Palmerton Borough Council last night presented a certificate of merit to Joel George, 11, for his courage and quick thinking in the rescue of Andy Behler on June 3 from the Palmerton Memorial Park Pool.

George was the first to arrive after seeing Behler floating face-down in 6 feet of water. He is credited with saving the youngster’s life.

Council also commended Michael Papay and John Wuchter for their efforts in the rescue mission. Lifeguard Howard Cyr Jr. was commended for reviving Behler at poolside.
