A look back: June 3, 1972

Seven months after ending a 20-year drought by winning control of the Carbon County Commissioners’ office, county Republicans have upended their party chairman and treasurer, electing two Weatherly residents to succeed them.

Attorney Cindy Ray of Weatherly is the new GOP chairman while Richard Garber is the treasurer. By identical 42-39 votes, they defeated Douglas Grieg, Penn Forest Township, and Deborah O’Brien, Palmerton, respectively.

By a 59-22 vote, Irene Hoppes of Jim Thorpe defeated Michael Brunda, Lansford, for the secretary’s post, while Lori Ann Rudelitch, Franklin Township, was unchallenged for the vice chair post.
