A look back: March 2, 1965
In a move expected to be followed by many of the taxing bodies, the Jim Thorpe Borough School Board, meeting here last night, voted to pay its tax collector a $3,500 yearly salary rather than a commission as before.
Under the old system, the tax collector received a 3 percent commission on school taxes collected during the rebate period and 5 percent on other taxes.
In 1964, Mrs. A. Hilferty received $5,610 in commission on school taxes; $1,322 from commissions in collecting Carbon County taxes; and $1,682 for Jim Thorpe Borough taxes.
Jim Thorpe Borough Council and the county commissioners have not indicated whether or not they favor the change from commission to a lower salary rate.
