A look back: March 8, 1938
Pierre S. DuPont, millionaire philanthropist, who heads one of the most influential families in American history, has given $80,000 to the White Haven Sanitorium for replacement of two boilers and general repairs to the power house, it became known last night.
DuPont, whose interests in the institution have grown to the total of $105,000 in gratuities in the past year, made the contribution with the stipulation that it be used solely for the power house. While visiting the sanitorium about a month ago, he learned of the poor condition of the boilers, prompting his donation.
His first contribution of $10,000 was made last summer. Later, he gave an additional $15,000 donation to be used chiefly for new buildings.
