A look back: March 9, 1979
A new era of mail service will begin in the village of Emerald on March 24. The local post office will be closed and the base for postal operations will be moved to Slatington. In addition, the residents of Emerald will receive door-to-door mail delivery for the first time ever.
Emerald is one of the last communities with the old time, private home post office. It is operated in the home of Velma Seip at 1058 Main St. and the setup is that all 95 families in the town go there for their daily mail.
Mrs. Seip announced she will retire on March 23. Her retirement affords the U.S. Postal Service the opportunity it wanted for some time — to modernize the service for Emerald.
