A look back: May 22, 1984
The Borough of Palmerton has just received its new “wonder unit,” a versatile tractor unit that will plow snow, haul leaves and eventually sweep streets and many other operations that a typical dump truck does not do.
This unit, called a Unimog, was purchased for $45,725 from Lehigh Concrete Plumbing Inc. of Allentown.
The unit has front and rear hydraulics for the borough to add various attachments in the future, such as a snowplow, street sweeper, hole-borer, payloader, forklift, bulldozer and more.
Borough Manager John Kasten said a ”vehicle such as this will outplow, outrun and outwork our other vehicles at a lower operating cost both in labor and materials.”
