A look back: May 3, 1965
Officer Donald Benyo, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Benyo, former Jim Thorpe residents, has received a plaque from his commanding officer in Philadelphia.
Doctors at the Temple Hospital credited the police officer with saving a 3-week-old boy who had stopped breathing.
They said Benyo, a member of the Philadelphia Police Force, administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to the child after his mother ran screaming from her home to his police car. While Benyo applied the resuscitation technique, his partner, Edward Dardin, drove to the hospital. By the time they arrived there, the child had been revived. Hospital authorities later telephoned the officers’ commanding officer to say the quick action saved the boy’s life.
