A look back: May 5, 1989

Siegfried Kratzel, who has served as a Palmerton Borough councilman for the past eight years, submitted his resignation yesterday.

Members of council accepted the resignation with regret and plan to fill the vacancy as soon as possible.

In a letter to the borough, Kratzel said the resignation is a result of his failing health.

“We will miss him,” Councilman Kenneth Heiney said. “He was the most conscientious councilman we’ve ever worked with. He was very committed to his job and did a great job for his committee.”

Kratzel, chairman of the buildings, recreation and parks committee, said his health does not allow him to “be the councilman I want to be or the councilman the community deserves.”
