A look back: May 9, 1977
An early-morning blaze on Sunday, termed “suspicious” by Nesquehoning Fire Chief Bernard Gogal and Chief of Police Harold Billig, burned a former Nesquehoning landmark hotel to the ground and damaged three other properties.
About 200 firefighters from Nesquehoning, New Columbus, Lansford and Jim Thorpe responded to the fire in the former Guy Hotel at the corner of West Catawissa and Ratcliff streets.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Marsden was heavily damaged while a small frame house on the hotel property was burned and a house at 212 Catawissa St. was scorched.
The old hotel, once known as the Eagle Hotel, is owned by contractor Joseph Maradeo.
