A look back: Nov. 12, 1993

Nearly half of the full-time officers of the Lehighton Borough Police Department will be retiring within eight weeks, including the chief of police.

Fred Scott, who holds that position, former police chief William Kunkle and patrolman Larry Smith have announced their retirements effective Dec. 31.

The notices were handed to Mayor Wilbur Bauchspies and other borough officials. The mayor said the retirements may have been prompted by the new pension provision passed Monday night by the borough council. The provision specifies the amount of pension a retired police officer can receive.
