A look back: Nov. 4, 1964
Jim Thorpe voters yesterday resisted an effort to revert the name of their community back to the original Mauch Chunk.
While the voting was no runaway, only the Sixth Ward favored Mauch Chunk, by a scant two votes. All of the other five wards voted to retain the name of the legendary American Indian athlete, Jim Thorpe.
The question on the ballot was: “Do you favor changing the name of the Borough of Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, to that of the Borough of Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania?”
The total for Jim Thorpe was 1,336 to an even 1,000 for Mauch Chunk.
