A look back: November 1, 1972
A fire is burning underground near a mine pit about a half mile northeast of Lansford’s Andrewsville section.
Apparently, the fire is feeding on coal. Glowing coals are visible in holes beneath the surface. The burning area covers about 15 square feet, judging from the point where smoke comes from the ground.
Bulldozer tracks indicate that coal dirt may have been pushed over burning trash in an effort to extinguish it, and, instead, the fire spread to the pieces of coal.
The burning is between a stripping road and a pit into which debris has been dumped, including the body of a scrapped car.
