A look back: November 27, 1982
Beginning Dec. 6, students in grades five through eight in the Lehighton Area School District will again receive music instruction in instrumental music. According to a release from the district, James Smith has been selected to fill the position vacated when John Reichard retired at the beginning of the 1982-83 school term.
Smith plans to visit the district schools on Dec. 1-3 to confer with principals, classroom teachers and students in order that a schedule of lessons can be arranged.
The action follows a controversy last month when the school board voted 6-1 in favor of hiring a part-time elementary band instructor. Residents who attended that meeting argued with the school directors that a full-time music teacher was needed.
