A look back: Oct. 26, 1984

Published October 26. 2019 06:39AM

It was back to school this morning for some 1,350 students in the Panther Valley School District, after an extended 46-day summer vacation that began on Sept. 10 when the district’s 74 teachers, unable to reach a new work agreement with the school board, walked off the job.

An end to the strike came when the teachers voted to return to the classroom and work under the old contract while negotiations continued, although Joseph Olexy, chief negotiator for the district, said the teachers are not working under the old contract. He said they “gave up that option” when they went on strike.

A total of 33 school days were lost when the teachers left their jobs.
