A look back: Sept. 4, 1956
Some 20,000 people, the largest crowd ever to attend an opening day, jammed the midway and exhibits as the weeklong 82nd Annual Lehighton Fair opened, after a “free” Sunday afternoon preview.
As early as 11 o’clock yesterday morning, visitors began to arrive, and shortly after 1 o’clock, officials reported a “packed house.”
The first feature show of the fair, Buddy Wagner’s Stunt Capades, went on in front of the grandstand in the afternoon, and, last night, another large crowd watched Lillian Briggs, the Rock ’n’ Roll queen, and a stage show.
Six Carbon County granges have exhibits in the main exhibit building, where the Towamensing and Little Gap Juvenile granges were awarded first place.
