A look back: Sept. 5, 1952
Violence was threatening briefly this morning as a jurisdictional union dispute kept the B-J Children’s Dress Factory from operating its new factory in the Navigation Building in Mauch Chunk.
Girls apparently intent upon going to work tried to penetrate the picket lines thrown around the entrance to the plant by members of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union. There was a little shoving around, some name calling and a tense moment when it looked as if some hair and dresses might be pulled off.
The dispute is factional between the International Ladies Garment Workers Union and the Amalgamated union, whose leaders claim the company is trying to force workers to join the International organization.
