Being a Philadelphia Sports Fan from the suburbs of Philadelphia , I grew up watching Kobe's father Joe play for the 76ers. Joe was born in Philly , played for LaSalle , and then played for his home team the 76ers. I remember Lower Merion High School winning the state championship in 1996 with Kobe as their star player. Kobe decided to skip college and enter the NBA Draft. The 76ers had the #1 pick and they took Allen Iverson from Georgetown. Kobe , like his father , both born in Philly , wouldn't be a 76er. I think this upset Kobe and a riff between him and Philly Sports Fans would carry on through the years. And that riff increased when Kobe and the Lakers beat the 76ers in the NBA Championship in 2001. But in the end Philly fans cheered for Kobe as he scored 60 points in Philly in his last game there. The riff had ended and us fans and Kobe patched things up. There's even a home video of Kobe happily going crazy when our Eagles won the Super Bowl a few years ago. It's ironic how Lebron James just passed Kobe as the 3rd leading scorer in NBA History and he did so in a Lakers loss in Philly just a few days ago. Kobe was one of the greatest players ever , born in West Philly , schooled in Montgomery County , and gone way too soon. May God Bless all the victims , and their families. Thanks for all the memories Kobe. And that's coming from a true Philadelphia Sports Fan.
