Lower Towamensing plans road repairs

Published April 13. 2018 11:46AM

Lower Towamensing Township Supervisor Ron Walbert said he and roadmaster Charlie Shupp met with John Davis, municipal services representative for District 5 of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, to discuss road projects for the summer and get estimates on the costs.

The primary project will be Covered Bridge Road, Walbert said, which will consist of milling, shoulder repair, patching, pavement repair, and applying a wear coat.

The cost would be about $66,700.

The second project would be a half-mile section of Spruce Street and would include base and shoulder repair, patching and other work similar to Covered Bridge. The cost comes in at $79,800.

Two additional projects were suggested. These include Wintergreen Road from where the chip seal stopped to the township line, Walbert said.

That would cost about $72,000. And work on Maple Street would run about $36,650.

“These are just estimates,” he said.

The total cost comes to just more than $333,000. The township received $400,000 in liquid fuels tax money, so that will cover the cost of the roadwork, Walbert said.

In addition to these repairs, there are several smaller road projects that the township would handle in house.

The supervisors decided to put the projects out to bid. All bids should be submitted by 10 a.m. May 7 when they will be reviewed at a pre-bid opening meeting.

Garbage bills

The supervisors also decided to notify people who are delinquent in paying their garbage bills in 2015, 2016 and 2017 that a lien could be brought against them if they do not pay the bill within 45 days. Supervisors’ Chairman Brent Green asked township solicitor James Nanovic to draft a letter to be reviewed at the next meeting.

Green said he met with the Stoney Ridge Park and Recreation Center Board.

They are planning an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. on April 29. He encouraged people to come out and take a look and the center.

Green also said the center plans to have a community playground build in May.

They have the equipment, now it is just a matter of renting a post-hole digger, and putting the equipment together at the Aquashicola Playground.
