Mahoning proposes tax increase

On Wednesday, Mahoning Township Supervisors voted to advertise the proposed 2019 budget.

Supervisor Bruce Steigerwalt made a motion to include a 0.75-mill increase in the budget with 0.25 mill for the general fund and 0.5 mill for the building and land fund. His motion passed 4-0 with Supervisors Steigerwalt, Robert Slaw, John Wieczorek and Franklin Ruch voting affirmative. Supervisor Myron Blahy was not present.

One mill in Mahoning Township is approximately $60 per property.

After including the increase in the budget, supervisors voted 4-0 to advertise the proposed budget for public viewing before they can officially adopt the budget at a future meeting.

In other business, supervisors:

• Accepted a renewed letter of credit for the Summit Ridge development.

• Accepted a renewed letter of credit for the Sage Meadows development.

• Granted an extension of time for the review of subdivision plans for Summit Ridge phase one until Jan. 29, 2019.

• Voted to allow Lehighton Borough to store a street sweeper at the township garage for the winter, pending approval by the township insurance carrier or a waiver from the borough.
