Mahoning supervisors discuss bridge project
Mahoning Township’s board of supervisors addressed several issues surrounding the upcoming Rex Road Bridge project during Wednesday’s meeting.
The board approved sending a letter concerning the responsibility for potential damage to the bridge from nearby trees. The approval will absolve the Kern family from any financial responsibility for the next two years.
“It is already up to the township to pay for repairs if the bridge is damaged. They’re waiving their opportunity to seek recovery from the Kerns,” Secretary-Treasurer Natalie Haggerty said.
The board also passed a motion for the recommendation for approval of a change order for the bridge project, directed to county officials.
“They had something like $11,900 in the contract for traffic maintenance and setting up a detour and everything, and we said, ‘we’ll take care of the signs,’ ” Supervisor Bruce Steigerwalt said.
The deduction will free up the allotted $11,900 in Community Development Block Grant funding, which can be used for other projects in the township.
The change order only included spots for township engineers LTL Consultants and general contractor Gordon H. Baver, so Steigerwalt suggested a change in order to include a line for a Carbon County representative.
Lastly, the board confirmed that the Schuylkill Fish Commission will not be stocking the area around Rex Road Bridge for the upcoming fishing season.
The bridge project is tentatively scheduled to begin on March 26.
