Mako to host chronic wasting disease seminar

Published October 03. 2018 01:13PM

HARRISBURG — State Rep. Zach Mako, R-Lehigh/Northampton, announced on Monday that he will host a chronic wasting disease seminar on Oct. 11 at the Blue Mountain Fish and Game Association.

The event will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. at the club, located at 4190 Wood Drive, Walnutport.

“I’m pleased to offer this opportunity for my constituents to learn more about CWD,” Mako said. “Almost 6,000 square miles in the commonwealth are designated disease management areas. In these portions of Pennsylvania, a variety of restrictions have been implemented to stop the spread of the disease. I urge anyone who is available to come to this important seminar in order to gather more information.”

CWD is a contagious, always-fatal disease that infects deer and elk in Pennsylvania. It is transmitted both directly through animal-to-animal contact and indirectly through food and soil contaminated with bodily secretions including feces, urine and saliva. No evidence exists that CWD is transmissible to humans or traditional livestock.

A representative from the Pennsylvania Game Commission will speak about CWD, how the agency is working to contain it and what residents and sportsmen can do to help. The event will conclude with a question-and-answer segment.

Targets and other sportsmen information will be offered.

To reserve a seat, visit Mako’s website at www.RepMako.com, or call one of his district offices at 610-502-2701 or 610-760-9805.

The 183rd District includes parts of South Whitehall, Washington and Whitehall townships and Slatington in Lehigh County. It also consists of Allen, Lehigh and part of Moore townships, and North Catasauqua, Northampton and Walnutport in Northampton County.
