Man found walking around naked given jail term

Published June 29. 2018 12:12PM

A Carbon County man found walking around his neighborhood naked was sentenced to a county jail term on Thursday after pleading guilty to one count each of criminal trespass and indecent exposure.

President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II sentenced Stephen Susel, 50, of Mauch Chunk Road, Palmerton, to serve one to 12 months in prison on the two counts.

On March 24 borough police were dispatched to the 800 block of Mauch Chunk Road for a report of a naked man walking around the area and then entering a home. On scene police found Susel in a nearby home naked and that he had caused damages inside the home and put the female homeowner in fear.

Susel, when asked by Nanovic why he was walking around naked, could not give a clear explanation to satisfy the jurist.

He did say, “I’m sorry for what happened. I want to go in the right direction.”

Susel admitted to an alcohol and drug problem. He said he had used methamphetamine earlier the day of the incident and did have a problem with alcohol, which he claimed is now under control.

The female victim told the court that Susel broke open a locked door to gain entry to her home and once inside went from room to room knocking things over and causing damages. She said he appeared to be “high on drugs or something” and added she knew Susel had an alcohol problem.

The jail term will be followed by 18 months of probation. Susel was also ordered to get both a drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and follow any recommendations for treatment, make restitution for damages of $970, zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and probation and have no contact with the victim.

He was given credit for 13 days spent in prison on the charges and began the jail term immediately.

As the victim of this crime nothing is what it seems to be . Within the court system in Carbon County the problem is the DA office the Judge only knows what is presented to him ..I do not feel justified , I will not allow my mind to be a victim I only play the role . Charges within DA office reduced or removed to my disliking in my testimony this Offender lived next door until eviction took place on June 20th ..No habits changed in those 3 months ..He will continue to victimize and cause choas within this county he will be relased shortly ..PA SAVIN has given me the date ..He continues to drive and proceed as if nothing has happened .2 Felonies and Criminal trespass under section 18 / 3053aii / Sentence no less than 9 months nor more than 2 years. He has no license and still continues to drive under the influence . If any crime is committed to another innocent bystander in the future you need to find me .The Da office has their own agenda. No need to alarm my granddaughter for this is the beginning of healing for both of us . Carbon County and law enforcement have not seen the last of him ..Choas will continue fix things the first time so you don't have to deal with them the second .Courts and law enforcement can chase their tails around in the future due to this kind of sentencing . It is over for me but not for the county by a long shot
You have that so right Tina. This is a slap on the wrist for him yet he will still do this again. Our system in this county is broken. The police look the other way. I have learned so much of this just with all I have dealt with. I truly do not trust any one in the system. Those types of felonies on his record he should be in prison but of course it is overcrowded. And the system is broken. Martha Zink
