Man leads police on high-speed chase

A Lehighton man faces charges after leading police on a high-speed chase.

Scott Albert, 23, of the 500 block of Blue Mountain Road, faces charges on one count each of receiving stolen property, fleeing or attempting to elude police officer, escape, flight to avoid apprehension, trial or punishment, and driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by patrolman Bruce Broyles of the Lehighton Borough Police Department:

At around 9:30 p.m. May 11, Broyles observed a red motorcycle enter the Thomas J. McCall Memorial Bridge from Route 209. Earlier that same shift, he was alerted that the vehicle was stolen.

As the motorcycle turned right onto Route 248 from the bridge, Broyles activated his emergency overhead light bar.

Albert looked back at the vehicle and began to accelerate at a high rate of speed, and Broyles activated his siren.

Albert continued to accelerate and speed while weaving in and out of traffic.

Broyles followed the motorcycle eastbound on Route 248, where it took the Bowmanstown exit and continued on Route 895.

Albert continued on Route 895, where he made a right onto North Kittatinny Road and nearly lost control of the motorcycle.

The pursuit continued on North Kittatinny until the roadway came to a dead end, where Broyles saw Albert jump from the motorcycle, which ultimately crashed on the shoulder of the roadway.

Albert fled on foot, and was seen to be wearing blue jeans, a black and white motorcycle jacket, and a green full-faced motorcycle helmet.

Several people were interviewed, all providing the same details that Albert was driving the motorcycle.

All those interviewed said that Albert entered a residence of Bowmans Road, where he had admitted he had just fled from the police.

On July 6, Albert was brought to the police department, where he agreed to speak with Lehighton police regarding this incident.

Albert admitted he was driving the motorcycle and provided a detailed summary of the route he took while evading police.

Albert further provided an accurate description of the clothing he was wearing the night of the incident.

On the night of the incident, Broyles discovered Albert’s driver’s license was suspended.

Albert is free after posting $50,000, 10 percent bail.

Albert is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 4 p.m. July 18 before District Judge Eric Schrantz of Jim Thorpe.
